The new Lower Residence Hall will change the face and fabric of Cal Maritime. This facility will place student housing right next to the heart of the academic core of the campus, giving them immediate access to all of the resources the campus has to offer. This new residence hall is the first step in creating the cohesive campus envisioned in the Facilities Master Plan (FMP), as the scale and massing of the building will complement the new academic buildings proposed in the FMP.
The proximity of the selected site to the academic core provides an inherent connection to promote Cal Maritime’s live-learn community mission. The proposed design consciously places lounge spaces at the far East portion of the building to allow for expansive, glazed facades that provide a visual connection to the academic life. Further, the building is orientated on the site to acknowledge the beauty of the Morrow Cove and San Pablo Bay. This long facade maximizes views from the south-facing rooms, lobbies, lounge and study spaces. Additionally, the rooftop deck amenity is the ultimate celebration of the stunning views as it overlooks the campus and Morrow Cove. Lastly, two main entrances are positioned on the site to be visible “beacons” seen from the waterfront. Ultimately, the design creates a building of duality—while the exterior design draws you in, the interior design allows for inspiring outward sightlines.
