New High School Campus
Aromas-San Juan Unified School District
San Juan Bautista, Calif.
- Completion Date: December 1998
- Square Footage: 43,300 (New Construction)
- Final Project Cost: $10.6M
A farming community with a strong rural heritage, it was important that San Juan Bautista’s new high school evoke the town’s agricultural roots. Founded in 1989, the district was relatively new at the time of construction and had never before embarked on such a large-scale project. A community-centered design process helped synthesize the many opinions about the new school into a shared vision for the town.
The final result included classrooms that were clustered around internal courtyards, with each grouping containing a science/art lab and teacher meeting spaces and work rooms. These classroom clusters are in turn organized around the school’s library/media center, which serves as a data and communications network hub and the main focal point of the campus.
